Star Trek 1:1 Automated Weapons Platforms

The Automated Weapons Platform (AWP) is an attempt to build the combat capabilities of a main-line starship into a framework which is inexpensive, customizable, and  functionally disposable. The AWP series are purpose built, from existing mass-produced parts.  The reactor and engineering section is from a sublight tug.  The nacelles are standard for light scouts of the era.  The turrets are standard base turrets.  Redundant deflectors allow the craft to more easily push through combat debris like a  heavier craft.

Refit this!

Having now graduated (with honors, thank you, (takes a bow))  I will likely resume my shipbuilding ways.    On the other hand, I am holding off until  Schema finishes this next release.  Those two new blocks of his will likely affect some of my design decisions.

As I resume, I will probably not be building (m)any new ships for a bit.  I'm going to make a rebuild/refit run through all the ships I have already created.

They need:

  • Improved Armor.
  • Improved Shielding
  • Weapons Tuning
  • Bunkered cores
  • Off-axis computer placement
  • Aesthetic enhancement with new blocks.
  • Bounce tubes to replace ramps.
Current projects that might get some love while I do my refits:
  • TOS Romulan (cloaking)
  • TOS Romulan (pretty, non-cloaking)
  • Enterprise D (long term project)
  • Constellation class (mini-carrier, great for mobile faction base)
  • Combat drone series (Thoroughly non-canon. Trek-styled automated gunships to hunt, kill, and supplant the venerable Migraine Triggers

Weapons balance

These last couple days I've been playing with weapons balance in response to the new AM cannon rules.  Whoah baby, have I learned a trick or two.  I used to think big gun=more boom= better. Nope.  If you put 100 Pont's of damage on a block it breaks.  If you put 1000 points on it... It still just breaks and none of the damage is transferred to neighboring blocks.  My test platform has been a refitted TOS Miranda. I am removing her big AM arrays and replacing them with a bunch of smaller arrays each tuned as closely as possible to remove a single block with every impact.  The arrays in each meta-array are lined up longitudinally so the shots follow as much as possible the same trajectory.  Good grief, its a flipping buzz saw.  I can rip through my ballistics gel at least 3 times faster than my previous configuration.  And not once have I hit an energy deficit.

No,  AM cannons have not been Nerfed to uselessness as far as I can tell.  Try using AM Cannons arrays of about 125 blocks each. More and you are wasting energy at impact.  Less and you are wasting energy at firing point.

The new version of the Miranda TOS will be out soon.  Seriously, I'm going to have to rebuild the weapons on all my ships.

Good Hunting!

Sector: StarTrek 1 to 1, Federation Space Dock

This is my biggest build yet.  The Federation Space Dock is a full 1 to 1 scale ship construction facility scaled to accommodate even a full scale Galaxy, Sovereign or Nebula class ship.

Note!  This is a full sector export with a star-base, not a ship!  See instructions here: http://star-made.org/content/exportimport-whole-sectors

LAG WARNING!  This thing is frimping huge.  If you could move planets, you could park one inside the structure.  Not for systems faint of processor or light of memory!

  • 20 base-turrets defend the structure
  • A spacious shuttle and loading dock allows for ample parking
  • A shop module is built in, allowing for easy storage and deployment of ship-building supplies

Star Trek: Mirror Temugin

(not canon, but canon-compatible)

5 AM cannon arrays:
2x 656 default damage
2x 756 default damage
1x 1843 default damage

14 large turrets:  8 dorsal, 6 ventral
6 small turrets

In the mirror universe timeline from Star Trek, the militaristic Terran Empire was engaged in a process of demilitarization and reform under the influence of its version of Mr. Spock.  This was a good idea at the worst possible time.  The most powerful refutation of Spock's reforms came in the form of "The Alliance", a union of the Klingon and Cardassian empires.  Temugin was built as an answer to that threat.

to everything turn turn turn.... TURN DAMMIT!

(Yes I'm still on break, bite me)

OK, Schema has tweaked the physics engine.    I just tried to turn my Miranda and it was slow as sap in January.   I'm thinking the Galaxy class has just been demoted to "star-base on rails" for most practical purposes.   So unless Schema does some more tweaking between here and there I think that's what I'll start back building in November... Star-bases.  Star bases don't have to turn, you see.

Yes, I know you can't export and save Star bases, but you CAN export sectors with star bases in them.  So I think my next major project will be the Regula 1 science station and "genesis" asteroid from the "Wrath of Kahn"

On Hiatus

I'm taking October off

I had planned to do a tutorial entry, but I'm overloaded with other priorities.  Have fun with Star-Made everyone.  I'll be back later.

OK, This is just silly

For the record... the ship is not closer than the planet.  All of these objects are in the same position relative to one another in each shot.

A peek for those inquiring about the state of the Galaxy Build:

And another...

With that, I may take a break for a bit

How do you know...

How do you know you've been building too many Star-Made ships?  When you shave half your face, and then stare confused at your reflection because you were sure you had Y/Z symmetry set.

Shipyard 60

The shipyard 60 in foreground with the faint
shipyard 120 under construction in the background.

The Star Trek franchise often shows ships in an orbiting "Space Drydock".  These construction, repair and maintenance facilities are both the birth cradles and the hospitals for craft whose size or structure rules out construction under planetary gravity.

This is the first and smallest planned shipyard.  It is meant to house ships whose Length, Width and Height are all less than 240x120x60 meters.

Next Project: The Galaxy Class!, but not really.

The people have spoken and by a huge majority have requested that I construct the Galaxy class model next.

So, yes.  The Star Trek Federation Galaxy class will be the next ship that I begin.  But it is NOT going to be my next project, nor will it be the next ship I complete.

1. A project like the Galaxy is BIG.  I will probably work on it for a very long time (months) during which I will take breaks to knock out several smaller vessels.  The uninitiated might ask "What's the big deal?  It's only a bit over twice the size of the Constitution."   No, it's a bit over twice the LENGTH of the Constitution, and more stoutly built.  I estimate the ship volume is on the order of 10 times that of the Constitution.  That front disk alone is the size of a sporting stadium.  I've seen the epic builds of the likes of Holdtech... I know its possible.  It'll just take a while.

2. It also seems to me that a major build needs major build facilities.  So THAT will be my actual next project.  Not a ship, but a space-dock construction and repair facility scale-able to the task.
The system goals include:

  • A construction scaffold grid to which the project and other elements can dock
  • Dockable lights to illuminate the project. from all angles.
  • Shields and large turrets to defend the ship and structure from wandering pirates during construction.
  • Modular construction so the cradle can be easily restructured for larger or smaller craft.
  • Independent light ships that can serve as movable platforms for lights and turrets.
  • Storage for extra blocks
  • Astrotech shuttles and turrets.
  • Observation galleries.
I would make this as a base, but you can't export and import bases can you?

The Miranda class is best known as the prototype for the Reliant, The ship hijacked by Kahn Singh in the motion picture "The Wrath of Kahn".  Miranda shares many of the same stylistic elements from the refitted Constitution class, but in a more compact form with the secondary hull integrated into the disk shaped primary hull that was the signature element of most Federation ships.

So many ships...

My dear Star-Made Captains

y'know... when I started this hobby of rendering starships out of 1m blocks I had no idea how much fun it would be, how consuming, or whether I'd be any good at it.   Somewhat to my surprise I find I'm pretty damn decent and getting better.   I did expect that as my experience increased, the builds would go faster.  This has proven not to be the case.  Instead of getting faster, I'm getting slower as I dig deeper into the game balance and try to render finer and finer details.   It's striking to have my new motion picture era Miranda floating next to my recent TOS Miranda  I've rendered angles and proportions I didn't even attempt in the older ship.  The newer vessel is more powerful, better shielded, more fully decorated, better lit, and more combat-ready... but that means I'm fussing over details I never considered in the previous build.  This Miranda has probably taken twice as long as the previous version, and I'm not done yet.

I'm not quite there yet... but I suspect I only have one or two more of the larger ships in me before I take a break for a couple weeks.  The deeper I go, the more rewarding it is.  But it's more taxing too.

My son has asked for a Promethius, and I plan to give it to him.  It looks like there is a lot of popular demand for a Galaxy class.... I'll give that one a serious "Maybe".   If I start that build it will likely be a while before you, or anyone, sees me again.

As always, I appreciate those who have been encouraging me. Likewise those who have been downloading and enjoying my ships.  It's a ridiculous amount of fun watching someone else playing with my toys on youtube.  I hope you continue to do so.

The Federation did not always come in peace.

The Federation at this point in Trek history was desperately trying to get a 4 nacelle design to work... This was one of their failed test platforms.  The problem wasn't actually the engines, or the design itself.  the problem was that they didn't have fast enough computer control to keep four nacelles balanced.  Instabilities were amplified in the four field system....    They just didn't have the tech at the time.  Ships like this were just as fast as hoped, until the engines went suddenly and violently out of phase, causing different parts of the ship to attain different warp factors, in one case scattering parts and crew over three light years.  So what do you do with a ship with two extra... make that redundant engines that can still be used to generate power, or can take over for the main engines should they be damaged?

Why, you slap some base turrets on there and don't tell the Vulcans!  That's what you do!

I keep hearing "Hey!  Why don't you do X from the Star Trek reboot?"

No, probably not.

Now, don't get me wrong.  I enjoyed both JJ Abrams Star Trek films.  They are PRETTY.  I like the look of the ships.  Apparently Apple won the design contract for the bridge controls.  I love his spin on the Klingons.

Although it was OK for the production values and budget of the original television series, the original Enterprise would have seemed underwhelming on the big screen.  To bring the old girl into her new medium in "The Motion Picture", she underwent a "refit" that seems to be nothing short of a frame-up rebuild.  At very least the entire secondary hull, warp nacelles, and the bridge module of the primary hull were entirely replaced.  It's not common knowledge, but separating the saucer section was not a new trick for the enterprise D.  The original enterprise had the capability as an emergency measure.  I suspect the new secondary hull and nacelles were built separately, then the original primary hull could have been separated and attached to the new structure, making this technically the same ship even if 60% of her mass had been replaced.

The grail!

Power computation:

Terms:
Tradition - A contiguous cluster of power generator blocks.  All blocks must be face to face, edge or corner contact does not count.
Bounding box - The smallest imaginary (cuboid) box that would fully encompass the tradition.

For a given tradition of power blocks where the bounding box dimensions are x,y,and z, and where there are n total number of power blocks in the tradition:

power= 2000000*(1/(1+(1.000696)^(-((x+y+z)/3)^(1.7)*(1/3)))-.5)+(25n)

Or as simplified by wolfram:

Power Regen= 2000000 (1/(1.000696^(-0.0514959 (x+y+z)^1.7)+1)-0.5)+25 n

(2000000/(1.000696^(-0.0514959 (x+2)^1.7)+1)-1000000)+25 x

Inspiration: Star Trek Prometheus Class

The Prometheus class was created to evoke the Earth legend about the titan Prometheus who defied the gods to bring fire to humans.    It doesn't take much imagination to see this sleek war engine "bestowing fire" in a far less benevolent sense.

The Prometheus was developed as a reaction to the mounting threats of the 24th century that made the 22nd and 22rd seem positively peaceful.  Prometheus is actually three nested warp-capable warships, sharing redundant power, shielding and drive systems when connected, or separating and pressing the attack from multiple vectors.  The Prometheus was said to be capable of easily disabling a Romulan D'diridex more than twice her size.

Unfortunately, current star-made docking dynamics do not yet allow this level of coolness.  But I have a special request from my son... so this ship is likely to happen sooner rather than later.

http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Prometheus_class

Inspiration: Star-Trek Luna Class

When commander... pardon me.... CAPTAIN Riker finally gave up on waiting for a certain bald Frenchman to retire to the admiralty board.  His first commissioned command was to the Titan, a Luna class exploratory vessel.  Not so big as the Enterprise or her name would suggest, the Titan was an explorers ship from the frame up, while history had reshaped the Enterprise into a graceful weapon.

The K't'inga was the "new" Klingon ship designed for "The Motion Picture".  It really is substantially similar to the D7.  It's supposed to be a new ship model, rather than a retrofitted older craft, but it bears a lot closer resemblance to the D7 than does the "refitted" enterprise to its appearance in the original series.

I've been working up to this one for a while. I wanted to give this ship a really respectful treatment. For a lot of people this is THE starship. This is the Constitution class starship exemplified by the iconic USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) from the original 1964 "Star Trek" television series.   All credit to Walter Matt Jeffries for the original concept and design from which I worked as closely as I could manage.

One of the ships you really never see on screen. Saladin class destroyers are low-warp capable light combat ships. This was the Federation's version of a PT boat. The Original NX class,  but adds a secondary hull. The story, as I understand it, is that had the program “Enterprise” aired a fifth season, the eponymous ship would have been fitted with a new “Warp 7” engine. The trouble is that the new engine did not fit in the engineering bay for the old “Warp 5” engine. The engineering solution was to build a new secondary hull onto the bottom of the ship, housing the new over-sized engineering section and warp core. If you look closely at the aft section of the secondary hull you will see an odd structure that looks like a shuttle or something that should detach. That’s the housing for the intermix chamber of the engine core. This ship was designed to eject the whole section in the case of an impending core breach. For this model it’s only decorative. Don’t try ejecting your core, it won’t help.

Unofficial Origin of the K't'inga

PhotoIn 2269 as figured on Earth, the great Klingon shipwright N'hoj of the house of Kohn was approached by a famous young general.  His name has been lost to history, and that should be your first hint as to how things would turn out.  The General felt that the venerable Klingon Battlecruiser was getting old and should be replaced within the Klingon imperial navy by a new design.  N'hoj accepted the assignment.

Open for business...

For those of you who happened in here by accident, I've gotten addicted to a game called StarMade. ...which sounds a bit awkward as a name really, except that its a LOT like MineCraft, but in space. so Space Craft? Too generic! StarCraft? Soo very taken. Right! Star Made it is. So... anyway. It's a sandbox game of building and exploration where pretty much everything is made of 1 meter cubic blocks. But you can build, arm, and pilot space ships that you build out of these blocks. It's like every LEGO set I ever wanted as a kid. What did I build with my LEGO blocks? I built space-ships! A match made in heaven!
